On May 26, 2010, Romania said goodbye to one of the greatest comedians of all time. Jean Constantin, the artist who made whole generations laugh with his savory roles and lines that became legendary, died at the age of 83, in his apartment in Constanța.
For the public, his disappearance meant the loss of a symbol of Romanian cinema, of an actor who turns any appearance into a memorable moment. Beyond the huge success and characters loved by millions of Romanians, Jean Constantin’s life was also marked by dramatic episodes, and one of them literally brought him to the brink of death.
Jean Constantin was born on August 21, 1927, in Techirghiol, in a large family with Greek and Macedonian origins. Before reaching the big stages and cinema screens, the future actor had a hard life and worked in Constanța Port, where he was a porter and bag counter.
