What documents do you need to be able to vote in the local and European parliamentary elections

On June 9, citizens can elect their leaders of local administrations, as well as members of the European Parliament.

Citizens who want to exercise their right to vote for the local and European parliamentary elections on June 9 need a valid identity document.

For the elections on June 9, citizens of at least 18 years of age, completed up to and including election day, will be able to vote based on an identity document issued by the Romanian state, valid on the day of voting, such as: identity card; electronic identity card; temporary identity card; identity card; diplomatic passport; electronic diplomatic passport; service passport; electronic service passport; simple passport; simple electronic passport; simple temporary passport; military service card, in the case of students from military schools.

For the European Parliament elections in the country, Romanian citizens can vote on the permanent list at the polling station where they are assigned according to their domicile or residence, or in any other polling station outside the respective locality, on the additional lists.

Also, citizens of another EU member state can vote if they have first registered on a complementary electoral list at the town hall of their domicile or residence, based on any valid document certifying their identity, or at another section, if the electoral office of constituency confirms that the person was included on the special electoral lists.

For local elections, citizens can vote in the locality where they have their domicile or residence, or if they live at an address other than the one on the ballot they had to get a floating visa 60 days before election day, i.e. April 10. And if they have registered on the lists in the Electoral Register, 45 days before the elections, they will be able to vote on the permanent lists, otherwise with the possibility of additional lists.

At the same time, according to BEC, non-transportable voters, i.e. those who cannot travel due to illness, disability, hospitalized in a health facility, in a home for the elderly or other social institutions, persons detained, remanded in custody at domicile or in prison, but who have not lost their electoral rights, will be able to submit an application for exercising the right to vote through the special ballot box for European parliamentary and local elections.

Romanian citizens who live or will be outside the country, on Sunday, June 9, 2024, will be able to vote for the European Parliament elections at any section organized by the Romanian authorities, based on a Romanian identity document, valid on that day.

Romanian citizens who have reached the age of 18 up to and including voting day have the right to vote. The demented and mentally alienated persons placed under ban and the persons who, on the day of voting, are condemned by a final court decision to lose their electoral rights, do not have the right to vote.

Polling stations in the country and abroad will be open between (local) 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
