“On the initiative of the two mayors, namely the mayor of Sector 5, Cristian Popescu – Piedone and the mayor of Sector 4, Daniel Băluţă, in the local council meetings at the end of July, decisions will be adopted that provide that all members of the national football team of Romania to become honorary citizens of Sectors 5 and 4. This approach of the two mayors comes as thanks for the joy that the players of the national team brought to all Romanians”the representatives of the Sector 5 City Hall wrote on Facebook on Friday.
Cristian Popescu – Piedone claimed that, after decades, the national football team managed to unite Romanians from everywhere and put Romania “back on the map“.
“I hope that this symbolic gesture that I and Daniel Băluţă will make will multiply in all the cities and communes in the country, as a sign of appreciation for the emotion that these football players have given us and to motivate them those from the national team”the mayor of Sector 5 also sent.
In the EURO 2024 championship, Romania ended its adventure at the European Championship, after only facing the Dutch in the first 20 minutes of the round of 16 match.
Pinched by the referee in the key moments and left without Vasile Mogoș, the only valid left defender in the group being hit hard in the chest area, the tricolors did not perform well in the groups.
The match ended 3-0 to the Netherlands, who moved on, while our players packed up and returned to the country. They did it with their heads held high, after a course that, in total, far exceeded expectations.
Now that Euro 2024 is over for us, we must look to the future. And the future means the League of Nations and the World Cup qualifiers in 2026, hosted by Canada, Mexico and the USA. In the League of Nations, we are in the 3rd division, after the relegation since the beginning of Edi Iordănescu’s mandate. Which means, this year, the clear objective is to get back into “B“, by winning the group we belong to.
Then there are the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which will take place between March and November 2025. It will be infinitely more difficult than in the case of the Euro qualifiers, because only the 12 group winners will go directly to the final round on American soil. In March 2026, the play-off matches will be played, after which the last 4 representatives of Europe at the World Cup will be selected. Romania will have the chance to reach such a final tournament after 28 years of waiting.
