The Minister of Culture, Raluca Turcan, says that the political world is extremely misogynistic and sexist

Every woman in politics at least goes through situations of verbal aggressiongrotesque to the core, that make you go home, cry and wonder if it’s worth standing in a world where those who are supposed to be role models end up behaving so rudely”, said Raluca Turcan on Prima TV.

Raluca Turcan, the Minister of Culture, was asked, in the show Insider politic, broadcast on Saturday on Prima TV, if he met teachers or politicians like Alfred Bulai in his career.

First of all, all this revealed information created a feeling of disgust and revolt about a grotesque aspect that exists in Romanian society. And it’s good that the ladies, the women, the students who were assaulted contacted the police, because it’s a matter that belongs to the police. I urge any person who is subject to emotional or physical aggression to contact the police. My personal experiences have confirmed to me, in all these years of existence and survival in the political world, that the Romanian society is misogynistic with sexist beginnings, and the political world is extremely misogynistic and sexist. Countless times, in the Parliament’s tribune, women are offended to the core, with all kinds of grotesque remarks, watched with indulgence and with a smile on their faces by the men in the Parliament, where the representation of women is only 10%. It is enough to be a source of amusement between men how much they managed to offend a woman“, said the Minister of Culture.

Raluca Turcan was also asked if there have been cases in which political colleagues crossed the red line of decency.

Very much. And I’m not the only one. I think that every woman in politics goes through at least situations of verbal aggression, grotesque to the bone marrow, that make you go home, cry and say if it is worth standing in a world where those who should be role models end up to behave so rudely”said Raluca Turcan.

Petitions regarding abuses at the Romanian Art Museum

The Ministry of Culture, led by Raluca Turcan, announced that it will send the Control Body to the National Art Museum of Romania, after receiving several memos from some employees who complained that there is “discrimination, pressure” and even “sexual harassment“.

As part of the older conflict within the MNAR, 7 memos were submitted to the Ministry of Culture (all at once) on April 19, 2024, citing dysfunctions in the institution’s activity, discrimination, pressure and one referring to actions that can be interpreted as harassment with sexual overtones (memorandum 2313/19.04.2024), plus a referral from the economic director (on 23.07.2024)“, stated the Ministry of Culture.

Sociologist Alfred Bulai, professor and well-known political analyst on TV, aged 61, used to ask female students to undress in front of him, in practice, in the room where he is staying and where he calls them to give them academic feedback, he wrote, on Monday, the investigative site snoop.ro, after talking with 18 victims and witnesses from 1995-2024 about the teacher’s behavior throughout his career of almost three decades, of which more than 20 years in SNSPA.

The Capital Police opened, on Monday, a criminal investigation file for “using the position for sexual purposes”, after the accusations against Professor Alfred Bulai, and on Tuesday, he was suspended from all teaching activities and from all positions held at SNSPA. Dozens of emails regarding Bulai’s behavior were received by prosecutors investigating the case after they launched an appeal.
