Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcick dies at 56 after long battle with cancer

Susan Wojcick, former YouTube CEO and one of Google’s first employees, has died at the age of 56 after a two-year battle with cancer. The announcement was made by her husband on Facebook.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Susan Wojcicki. My beloved wife of 26 years and mother of our five children left us today after a two-year battle with lung cancer”he wrote, according to The Guardian.

For his part, Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a message of condolence.

“I am incredibly saddened by the loss of my dear friend Susan Wojcicki after a two-year battle with cancer. She was an essential element in the history of Google, and it is hard to imagine the world without her.”he wrote on the X platform.

Wojcicki, one of the most prominent women in tech, stepped down as CEO of YouTube in 2023, a position she held for nine years, saying she wanted to “start a new chapter focused on family, health and personal projects”.

“It was one of the best decisions of my life”Wojcicki wrote when announcing her departure.

She previously served as vice president of advertising products at Google and became CEO of YouTube in 2014. Prior to Google, Wojcicki worked at Intel and Bain & Company.
