Mosquito bites cause victims in Suceava, where three patients, all over 80 years old, arrived at the County Emergency Hospital with West Nile virus infection. The three were diagnosed with meningitis, and the pathogen was identified in the cerebrospinal fluid. One of the elderly died, another is in serious condition, admitted to intensive care.

The patients from Suceava county, in whose case the West Nile virus infection was confirmed, are 81, 83 and 88 years old, respectively. They arrived at the hospital presenting symptoms such as fever, headache, confusional syndrome, writes news.ro.
“They were diagnosed with meningitis, in which case, in order to identify the pathogen, a puncture is made to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Following the analysis of the CSF, the West Nile virus was identified in all three patients”, said representatives of the Suceava County Emergency Hospital.
The 81-year-old patient had a favorable course of the disease, being discharged on August 17. The 83-year-old patient, who also had other medical conditions, died on Monday, August 19, due to the aggravation of associated pathologies.
The 88-year-old patient, who has been hospitalized since July 29, “he had an unfavorable evolution with the worsening of his general condition and transfer to ATI on August 1, his condition still being serious”.
