The statement was made on Tuesday evening, in an interview with Antena 3, after he was asked to ask a question for those announced as his counter-candidates in the presidential elections.
“I would like a question for everyone: if we, as Romanians, have the capacity, if we have the capacity, after these elections, to immediately overcome the electoral marks left after an electoral campaign, if we have the capacity, the next day, to sit down at the table and let’s stick to a project for Romania, a project that must also see external relations and national defense and the national defense industry, let’s see the economic priorities. Each of us (…) let’s all put our knowledge, our relationships, our specialists to the table, because the most important of Romania are coming. With certainty, I, Marcel Ciolacu, if I win, I will not take all the power, the power must be shared, especially in the current context. I also told my party colleagues not to bother. Even if PSD will be the first party, it will not have 50%, a new coalition will have to be formed. The prime minister must be from another party, to create the balance and the conditions for such a challenge that I want“, stated Ciolacu.
He emphasized that, for the next period, Romania needs “a cohabitation and a stable government”.
“We cannot afford to have political crises in Romania. And then we’ll see each other in another election four years from now. Until then, my name is Ciolacu, my name is Lasconi, my name is Ciucă, my name is Mircea Geoană, we sit down at the table and find the best solutions. We can’t buy time, but through quick decisions, through mutual respect… We each remain adversaries, the president should not be an adversary with any of them. Through mutual respect, I think we can finally build something normal in Romania“, said the prime minister.
He pointed out that the approach taken by those who held the position of president of Romania in the last 20 years was totally wrong, causing “hate and division”.
“The president for 20 years is somewhere up there, for 20 years, from there, we see hatred, division. He no longer leaves free will, he intervenes when he has interests for a certain party. (…) Then, after the president, there is Parliament, the Government, politicians, and somewhere below, the people. And it goes from top to bottom. It must be completely changed, the president must start from the bottom up, if he wants to build something normal in this country. It doesn’t matter if you are from the left or the right, what matters is what you want to do for the Romanians. I don’t want to be a president to shoot at the goal. Traian Băsescu shot at the goal and whoever stood in his way was killed, put in prison or in the grave. We had another president who was too lazy to enter the field, (…) he intervened according to the interests of the party he belonged to. He offended another party, he divided Romanians into good and bad, some are red plagued, some are I don’t know how. They did not take into account the fact that they were both presidents of Romania. The president must be on the field, he must be a referee, a fair referee, a referee in solidarity with the one who gets injured. Reforms do not only bring applause. I want to be a president who is next to the prime minister. I want to go hand in hand with the Prime Minister to the President of the Commission to negotiate for Romania“, declared Marcel Ciolacu.
In this context, the head of the Executive criticized “the arrogance of the public system“, manifested from the level of town halls to the level of central institutions.
“If we do not once understand that we are in the service of the Romanians when we go to work, regardless of where you are in central or local administrationwe no longer heal“, Ciolacu also said.
