It has been said about Ion Țiriac (85 years old), more than once, that he is the kind of man who does not put his hand in his pocket to take out a euro, if he is not convinced that, later on, he will win three. Appearing on the show “Prietenii lui Ovidiu”, moderated by the director of Gazeta Sporturilor, Ovidiu Ioanițoaia, Țiriac was asked directly if it is true that he is stingy, despite the fact that he owns a huge fortune. To his credit, the former tennis player gave an honest answer.
What did Ion Țiriac say?
*I am very stingy. Yes, of course it is! I worked in a factory when I was 16 and had 375 lei a month. So I know what it means to earn a living. When I turned 15, I had 30 money in my pocket. And I went and bought 2 slices of bread. So I know what money is and how you earn it. That’s why I’m stingy!
*I cannot change or save a country. Thank God I didn’t get into politics at all. I do what I can to have a man who has had a little more luck, and others who speak of miserliness tell me what they have done in their lives. Or how much a kilo of bread costs. And if they earned it or stole it.
