Romania is assured of a medal at the individual European Table Tennis Championships in Linz (Austria), in the women’s doubles event, after the Romanian-Austrian pair Bernadette Szocs/Sofia Polcanova got past the Romanian-Spanish couple Adina Diaconu/Maria Xiao today in the quarter-finals, with 3-0.

On Friday, in the round of 16, Adina Diaconu and Maria Xiao defeated the couple Gaia Monfardini (Italy)/Rachel Moret (Switzerland) 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-1), and Bernadette Szocs and Sofia Polcanova passed the Turkish Ece Harac/Ozge Yilmaz with 3-1 (11-8, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8). In another round of 16 match, Elizabeta Samara and Andreea Dragoman lost dramatically to the French Nina Guo Zheng/Leana Hochart 2-3 (7-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-13).
Three Romanians are playing singles today
Berni and her partner will play today, for a place in the finals, from 17.30, against the Serbian players Lupulesku/Surjan. Until then, the Romanian will also perform in singles, from 12.30, against the Swede Bergstrom, for access to the quarters. In the same phase of the competition, Andreea Dragoman will meet the French Yuan, while Eliza Samara will play against the German Winter.
Bernadette Szocs is the reigning European champion. She will try to defend the title she won in 2022, in women’s doubles. In Munich, in the same event, Elizabeta Samara and Andreea Dragoman won silver medals, and Adina Diaconu won bronze.
