The President of Romania was in favor of European integration at the referendum in the Republic of Moldova, expressing his appreciation for the popular support given to President Maia Sandu and democratic values. In a message posted on X, he emphasized that the fate of Moldova must be decided exclusively by its citizens: “I welcome the vote for European integration in the referendum in the Republic of Moldova and for the popular support expressed in favor of President Maia Sandu and democratic values. The fate of the Republic of Moldova must be decided only by its citizens”.
This message comes in the context in which the referendum was marked by a record participation from the Moldovan diaspora, which had a significant impact on the result. With a percentage of 50.41% of the votes for the “YES” option, Moldova reaffirms its commitment to the European path, despite external challenges and pressures.
The President of Romania emphasized the importance of this historic moment for Moldova and reiterated Romania’s continuous support for the European integration of its neighbor. This support is essential in the context of increased tensions with Russia, which firmly opposes Moldova’s pro-European orientation.
The current president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who is running for a new mandate, obtained 633,403 votes, while the candidate of the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandr Stoianoglo, obtained 399,740 votes. The two will face each other in the final round of the presidential elections.
