An article from 2003, recently brought to light, shows that President Klaus Iohannis met with Călin Georgescu when he was mayor of Sibiu. At the time, the two discussed the implementation of the so-called Agenda 21.

On March 5, 2003, the daily “Tribune” from Sibiu, newspaper founded in 1884 by Ioan Slavici, headline on the front page: “The UN teaches us how to attract investment”

In that article, it was mentioned that the municipality of Sibiu was included, from March 4, 2003, in the United Nations (UN) program “Agenda 21”.

“The representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Romania, Soknan Han Jung, and the director of the National Center for Sustainable Development, Călin Georgescu, discussed with the mayor of Sibiu, Klaus Iohannis, the implementation of “Agenda 21″. At the press conference, Călin Georgescu explained that the purpose of the program is to develop structures in the local administration capable of attracting major investments in the decentralization of the administration and in public/private partnerships”reported the newspaper at the time.

The daily also mentioned that “mayor Johannis says he will insist on the development of the IT industry and high technology”.

According to the publication, Sibiu was to elaborate, at that time, the local strategy and sustainable development for 20 years and a local action plan for the next 4 years. The implementation of the program required the establishment of a Local Council for the coordination of Local Agenda 21, in which important institutions, NGOs and media institutions would be co-opted.
