Crin Antonescu was asked, on Saturday, on Antena 3 CNN, if he will run for the upcoming presidential elections.
“They are talking about Antonescu’s candidacy. There is no candidacy of Antonescu. I have not submitted any candidacy, I have not proposed any candidacy, I do not expect any kind of candidacy. My name was circulated, not by me, but by others. Please direct all questions regarding this topic to the parties. I only want one thing. I have been all my life and I will be until I close my eyes a free man who manifested himself on the public stage as much as he did politics freely. Good, bad, with obvious mistakes, with successes maybe, maybe not, but freely“, declared Antonescu.
He also considered that it would be ideal for the future governing coalition to have only one candidate in the presidential elections.
“I think it would be ideal to be a single candidate. It is hard to find, but ideal, because this way, in this upcoming campaign, again the two pro-Western candidates will fight each other and cause damage to each other, leaving the anti-Westernist to take a strong candidate, no matter what they call him, in the second round. That’s why I think a single candidate would be good“, he said.
Crin Antonescu also considered that the Government should have set the date of the presidential elections. He also claimed that Iohannis should have already completed his mandate in order not to create the impression that “he stays as long as he wants in Cotroceni“.
“The best solution at this moment was that after the decision of the CCR, the government in office very quickly set the date, the calendar of the presidential elections, in order not to increase the tension in society and leave room for the idea that elections will take place when they want, in quotes, how say those who take advantage of this idea. I also believe that it would have been appropriate to arrange together with President Iohannis a solution by which, at the end of his mandate, his lordship would end his presence in Cotroceni and, if necessary, the newly elected president of the Senate would exercise the interim role, in order not to create a different impression, that Mr. Iohannis stays as long as he wants at Cotroceni“, explained Crin Antonescu.
