What additional document must students present to receive a discount on train tickets

CFR Călători has announced that starting January 1, 2025, students will benefit from a 90% reduced rate for domestic rail transport, but only on the route between their home town and the town where the educational institution they attend is located. The discount applies only to 2nd class and is valid for all train categories.

For now, students cannot purchase train tickets online. Archive

But, for the time being, young people can only purchase tickets and subscriptions in physical form, at train station counters or CFR travel agencies. The reason? The online platform has not been updated. Moreover, young people have to present, in addition, one more document.

Why can’t train tickets be purchased online?

Discounted tickets or season tickets can no longer be purchased online until application rules are approved and digital applications are updated. For the time being, students will only be able to buy tickets at train station ticket offices or CFR travel agencies. In situations where the train is boarded from stations where there is no ticket office, discounted tickets can be purchased directly from the train, provided they are requested immediately after boarding.

Documents to benefit from a discount on tickets and train passes

To benefit from the discount on tickets and train passes, students must present the following documents:

  • The student ID card issued and endorsed by the higher education institution where they are enrolled, on which the location of the institution is specified.
  • The identity card, showing the beneficiary’s domicile.

ID card verification is a first. At the counter or on the online platform, the domicile and full address of the attended educational institution is verified. If, for example, a student living in Craiova studies in Bucharest, he will receive a 90% discount for this route. if the same student travels to Constanța, he will pay the entire ticket.

CFR Călători recommends students to purchase their tickets in advance to avoid crowding at the ticket offices. This change follows the publication of GEO no. 156/2024, which establishes the new conditions for granting discounts for students in 2025.
