Hollywood’s 2025 film awards season opens Sunday with the annual Golden Globes, where films like “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez” compete for trophies and attention ahead of the Oscars in March.

Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Angelina Jolie are among the stars nominated in the categories dedicated to Best Actor at the ceremony that will be presented for the first time by actress Nikki Glaser, according to Agerpres.

Favorite film for the main trophy

The Spanish-language musical “Emilia Perez” and the post-World War II drama “The Brutalist” received the most nominations.

“The Brutalist” tells the story of a Holocaust survivor, played by Adrien Brody, who goes to the United States in search of the American dream. The film, with a duration of 3 and a half hours, is considered the favorite for the main trophy of the gala, dedicated to the best drama.

Also nominated in the Best Drama category are “Conclave,” about the election of a new pope, as well as two films starring Timothee Chalamet, a Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” and the sci-fi epic “Dune – Part II”.

Unlike the Oscars, musicals and comedies compete in a separate category at the Golden Globes. Among the films nominated are the remarkable box-office success Wicked and the dark romantic comedy Anora.

Winning a Golden Globe can boost the odds in the Oscar race, which will take place in March. If a film or an actor wins a Golden Globe, “increases the probability that a member of the Film Academy will be interested in that project”, said Scott Feinberg, executive director of the gala.

Scott Feinberg predicts that “The Brutalist” or “Conclave” could be the winner of the drama category at the Golden Globes. For the musical or comedy category, it is more difficult to make predictions, as the nominees are very different from each other.

“Emilia Perez,” a musical thriller, tells the story of a Mexican drug dealer who transitions from male to female. “Wicked,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” is an adaptation of a popular Broadway play.

“Anora,” a film about a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, is more of a traditional comedy, while “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore as a celebrity who has lost her charms and finds herself in search of the fountain of youth, is first and foremost a horror film, Feinberg said.

In the TV category, “The Bear,” a behind-the-scenes restaurant series, leads the nominations, followed by crime comedy “Only Murders in the Building” and historical epic “Shogun.”

The winners of the Golden Globes are chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, while the Oscars are awarded by votes of 9,000 members. The committee that awards the Globes has been expanded in recent years, and organizers have instituted reforms after being criticized for ethical issues and a lack of diversity.
