“What can you say to a parent whose child is dying? I decided not to write immediately in the heat of the moment… I decided to let the emotions, the frustration, the helpless rage, the need to shout in the wilderness die out. After the death of an infant who had all the described complications of whooping cough (pertussis) last week,”
wrote Dr. Mihai Craiu, primary pediatrician at the “Alessandrescu-Rusescu” Mother and Child Health Institute in Bucharest, on his Facebook page Virtual Children’s Hospital.

According to the doctor, after a few days, “the cruel, cold, implacable reality of epidemiology has suddenly returned to our hospital”. On Tuesday night, another very young infant, 5 weeks old, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in a serious condition.

“Like a cold shower, that’s how I felt when I was listening to my colleague read the duty report. (…) The exemplary efforts of the entire on-call team, and especially of the nurses on the night shift, led to the stabilization of the child, who was breathing extremely hard. He is now non-invasively mechanically ventilated and hopefully a cured baby.” explains dr. Cray.

The cold shower, claims the renowned pediatrician, was the result of multiplex PCR testing. The child was diagnosed with whooping cough, meaning “whooping cough”, as it is popularly called.

“And this one…Why? From where? Because a newborn does not walk alone… Very likely from the family. This is to be proven by the epidemiological investigation of the experts from the Public Health Directorate of the respective county”says the pediatrician.

According to the specialist, the drastic laws of epidemiology “they need neither our approval nor our science to work … mathematically’.

“Pathogens can be transmitted to various people, cause illness or even death, and if we haven’t seen them or don’t believe in their existence. I conclude with the signal from the message below – whooping cough causes a serious, possibly fatal illness in young children“, says the pediatrician.

This disease could be prevented by vaccinating pregnant women in the last trimester of pregnancy (as stipulated by the Protocol of the National Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology) or infants at 2, 4 and 11 months of age, respectively relatives who live in the same house as this small infant , immediately after birth.

“Although we have the vaccine, we decided not to use it. Not making a vaccine at all for a disease that kills now in 2025, I can’t help but understand that. It’s like taking a gun and playing Russian roulette with your child. What if you fired a bullet?”added Dr. Cray.
