The Show “is unanimously considered by the close ones of Édith Piaf the most beautiful tribute ever brought to the singer’s career.

Nathalie Lermitte, one of France’s most appreciated artists, started her career in 1984, at 18, knowing a lightning success.

She was born into a family of musicians and began to sing from the age of six in her father’s band, and at eighteen she released the first album “Tu es Tout Ceut J’aime”, two extracts on single being sold in over 400,000 copies. The homonymous song was noted by the French radio stations, which began to broadcast it frequently, thus launching the artist’s national career. The song continued its career registering numerous soundtracks for television series and animations, and 1989 marked the artist’s beginnings in the musical theater, being asked to play in the famous show “Starmania” for three years on the Marigny Theater stage, and then in an international tour concluded in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The artist’s career continued with a series of musicals in which, most of the times, he played the role of Édith Piaf, culminating with Piaf! The Show, considered the biggest tribute to Piaf.

In an emotional interview exclusively given for “Weekend Adevărul”, Nathalie Lermitte spoke about her beginnings in music and invaluable help she received from the great singer France Gall, but especially about her time with Édith Piaf. This year’s tournament is even more impressive, given its significance: the 110th anniversary of the birth of the unmistakable Piaf.

While you were only 9 years old, the press in the Picardia region is already dedicating a first article, with a premonitory title: Nathalie: a future market?“. How did you feel thisa resemblance? Made you think of a music career on the footsteps of the unique Édith Piaf?

Indeed, I was 9 years old then and I think I didn’t realize the importance of the article. Instead, I can say that I did not want to become a new Édith Piaf, because I already realized that only one was Édith Piaf, a unique, extraordinary voice. Instead, that article made me realize that I wanted to sing and play my life, that’s why I was sure.

Two months before
BAquause scheduled for June 1984, you have been excluded from high school because the director
INSTITUTION Consider you spend too much time on television plates and especially to sing Variets. What was your defense in front of this old spirit?

It was really a shock and I realized especially that varieties, especially for that man, represented something superficial. Which upset me and annoyed me, but at the same time, motivated me a lot. And maybe than that director I took the baccalaureate, because I prepared myself, and his reaction gave me the necessary strength despite the fact that I was often present on the television plates.

Mentor at the beginning of the road

In 1988 shortly after a first missed audition for Starmania ”(Musical, OpereA-rock), convinced of your talent, the sea

singer France Gall will offered the opportunity to work together for a week. How it was for you that experience?

It was something incredible. Often, when I remember that week I prepared with her I tell me I dreamed, because it was really incredible. France Gall took me under his wing. I worked with both her and Michel Berger (NE – singer and composer, France Gall’s husband until his death, in 1992) for a week, face to face. I prepared for “Starmania” alone with her. It was a truly privileged moment. I must confess that for me, who had a solo singer’s career, “Starmania” and the fact that France Gall took me under his wing made me realize that I love the musical theater. And now I can say that I thank France Gall interpret the role of Édith Piaf all over the globe, because she revealed my musical theater.

In 1996, after first you refused, after three weeks of reflectionC TII, you finally agreed to interpreted

on Édith Piaf in a show. What was the main reason that convinced you to take this step?

There were several reasons. I remembered myself, when I was only 4 years old and I had a shock listening to the market-created extremely intense and special emotions. There were also a little spiritual reasons, a little personal, including my grandmother’s relationship. It was somehow a click, something supernatural, above me, despite my fears and doubts. This choice has changed my life.

“I feel complete on stage”

You performed the gorgeous song Hymne à l’amour “and in duet with Céline Dion, in a television set. It was not something provided, the moment was improvised and very exciting. How aand lived This unique duet?

Yes, it was a unique, absolutely improvised moment, which I took as a gift from heaven, as a gift of the moment. We must live the present, we must live every moment, this is the secret of life. In French “Présent” also means a gift. And even so, the present is a gift we have to enjoy.

Why is your home scene?

Because on stage I feel complete, I feel safe on stage. Because I simply feel all over there.

The song, beyond the wounds

You have documented yourself enormously related to Édith Piaf’s life. What detail in life did you impress you the most?

There are many details about her life that impressed me. But it is a primordial thing that excited me much and in depth: for me, Piaf is an eternal child. When I look at his photos, from youth to the end, I see a child look. I see in those photos a child’s look with a source of bottomless love and which all life has tried to fill this source with love. Piaf was an eternal in love with love, and that excited me enormously. That child excited me. I think Piaf has tried all his life to heal Édith’s wounds.
