Botoșaniul, known as a true “city of geniuses” hosts the 75th edition of the National Mathematics Olympiad, for the high school level. Hundreds of students from all over the country, including the top Olympians, participate. It is one of the most powerful editions in the history of the Olympics.

This year the National Mathematics Olympiad, the queen of school competitions in exact sciences, was organized in Botosani. The choice of organization of the 75th edition of the competition, in the extreme north of Moldova, is a tribute to Botosani considered a true cradle of the Romanian geniuses.
In the North-Moldav county, Octav Onicescu, Dimitrie Pompeiu and Simion Sanielevici, top mathematics, true legends and road openers in the scientific world were born among others. The first sample took place on April 2, but the Olympics will extend until April 6. Hundreds of students from all over the country participate in high school.

This edition organized in the municipality of Botosani with the support of the County School Inspectorate, Botoșani City Hall, Botosani County Council but also of Mathematical Scientific Society in Romania brings together 365 students from grades IX-XIII from all over the country.
Including top Olympics that have been noted for previous editions. In addition, 64 teachers from the Central Commission are also present in the North-Moldavian city, as well as 47 accompanying teachers. Not to mention the hundreds of parents who came to support their children. For six days, Botosaniul became the capital of mathematics in Romania. The representatives of the school inspectorate say that this historical edition of the Olympics was organized in Botosani due to the fame that the county enjoys in the world of Romanian mathematics. Including by the exceptional results acquired, annually, by the Botosan students at the national profile competitions.
“We were elected due to the results obtained over the years of students but also because it wanted the 75th edition to be organized in a cultural center of the country, the city of geniuses. It is an important matter because this way Vorm had the opportunity to confirm our reputation, but also the perfect opportunity to show what can be Botosani.”says Sebastian Mihalache, math school inspector in Botosani.
In addition, Botosani is known throughout the country and for its mathematics teachers, many authors used at national level. “The whole country knows that in Botosani there is this tradition in mathematics and I am an example for the other children”confesses the mother of an Olympic from Hunedoara County, who came to support her child.
Special prizes and a unique location
This edition was organized in collaboration with the Mathematical Sciences Society. Through this scientific society the students benefit from special facilities. Specifically, those who will get prizes will be able to enter colleges without exam.
“The partnership consists in the elaboration of the topics, in the used human resources. In addition, the Mathematical Sciences Society rewards students with diplomas and medals that are valid for admission to the faculty and many children, among those who have prizes enjoy this advantage.”says Ioan Ciobănașu, president of the Botosani branch of the mathematical scientific society in Romania. In order to organize this top educational event, the authorities in Botosani mobilized and made a huge effort for the accommodation, the mass of the students and teachers from the country but also for the organization of the competition rooms.

Uniquely, the first test took place in a huge sports hall. It is about the Multipurpose Hall “Elisabeta Lipă” in Botosani, where the playing area was transformed into an examination room, with individual banks but also all the necessary facilities. “Everyone took care of us here to be fine. Proverbial Moldovan hospitality. So far is very good”, The mother of a participant in the Olympics also confesses. “For us it is an honor that we were given the chance to organize the 75th edition here in Botosani. The effort is extraordinary and ISJ and the County Council and the City Hall have brought the extraordinary contribution to the organization.”adds Professor Ioan Ciobănașu.
Subjects, a challenge for the Olympics
This edition turns out to be one of the most powerful in the history history. At least that’s how I feel a part of the Olympians. Especially those with more active editions, say that the topics have been more difficult than in other years. “It was hard, very difficult. I did not expect it to be so difficult. I think the topics two and three were the hardest.”said one of the Olympics, when leaving the competition. Another student, from Prahova County, confirmed, for the topics of the X -a class.

“Pretty difficult. All were difficult, and the combinatorial and geometry problems were heavier than those of previous years.”he says.
However, the parents of the Olympic students say that even a failure is a positive experience, if you manage to learn something from it. “Olympic in mathematics you arrive with a lot of perseverance and after each failure you need to know how to get up. Not all children have only successes, it must be a special talent, a special ambition, to have the right mentors, and not always success is guaranteed. If you have a failure to continue, if you love math.”adds hunedoreanaca to support its child.
