Nicușor Dan said on Wednesday evening, at Antena 3, to see three times in 4 years with Matei Păun. Reporters Click! have documented at least three such meetings in recent months.
“That there is a gentleman whom Matei Păun named and I said that from time to time I consult with him, this has absolutely nothing to do with the Department of Pro Russia or Pro West. I met him 3 times in 4 years. No, there are no (no frequent meetings). I said that on some technical campaign issues I consult and that’s all“Nicușor Dan said.

Matei Păun seems to be the main informal counselor of Nicușor Dan, and their relationship is more than 10 years old, the businessman being involved in the campaigns in the center of which was Nicușor Dan.
Regarding the positioning of Nicușor Dan to the relationship with Matei Păun, the current mayor in office stated, on February 15, 2025, at political insider: “I call him from time to time ask him how things would do”.
In 2024, Nicușor Dan stated: “Matei Păun was the official campaign chief of mine and the USR, eight years ago, yes, everyone knows that, and that’s all. He didn’t give me any money in this campaign, and that’s all (…). As publicly said several times, it is one of the 10 people who are part of my staff at this time, but that’s all. That is, from the so-called campaign team, people I advise on the messages we give in the public space when I go out. Did not contribute financially ”.
However, the statements of Nicușor Dan are in contradiction with the reality, proof being several images in possession of Click! For example, on the day he stated that he was calling Matei Păun from time to time, Nicuşor Dan met at the headquarters of the Capital with the businessman.
Nicusor Dan was also accompanied on the day of filming the campaign clip, on March 6, by Matei Pǎun and by Ema Prișcǎ, the one who officially coordinated the campaign from the local. Moreover, Nicușor Dan was seen several times near the businessman’s home, which would be the informal campaign headquarters.

What Nicuşor Dan says about Pǎun’s procedure statements
Matei Pǎun criticized in 2016 the economic sanctions imposed on Russia. In 2017, he declared for Vice that he admires and appreciates the “mysticism and weight” of the Russian Orthodox Church of the former KGB officer, close to Vladimir Putin, Patriarch Kirill (on his behalf Vladimir Gosdeeev). In the same interview, he stated that the West is the main culprit for the tensioned relationship with the Russian Federation and that, over time, the Russian people have only shown their opening to the Westerners. Regarding the statements of the businessman, Nicușor Dan said, in a false interview, that his pro-Russian visions of his counselor dates back beforehand to invade and attach Crimea, in 2014, that Matei Păun “is, without discussion, pro-Western”.
