Gymnasium graduates have obtained at the National Assessment 2025 the best results of the last 13 years. If the figures show a better training or there are other explanations, we tried to find out from the education experts Daniela Vișoianu and Marian Stas.

The National Assessment exam was taken by 152,233 graduates of the eighth grade (out of the total of 159,229 registered graduates). The participation rate was 95.6%, and average or equal to 5 obtained 126,495 students (83.1%). The result of the averages above 5, before the appeals, is the best of the last 13 years, the Ministry of Education and Research said.

Last year, for example, it was 74.4%, instead close results were registered in 2022-82.4%and in 2015-79.4%.

Although the figures “do well”, there are more problems. “These results have no equivalence in school results. If we look at the media for the four years of gymnasium we do not see an equivalence, we do not see the same type of distribution between the school results and the results of the National Assessment. Any evaluation that does not have the distribution of the Gaussian results raises problems for the specialists in evaluation ”, notes the education expert Daniela Vișoianu. Moreover, the current model leads, as it will be perpetuated, to a “and better training to achieve certain results ”. “Basically, the children are currently learning for the test and optimizes their scores, hundreds of hundredths, in prolonged atnaments with the teachers with whom they do meditations or with the teachers in the classroom”, Vișoianu explained how bigger grades were reached.

Top results have especially recorded children from families who have invested in meditations over the years. In these families there is a wait for the average to provide them with a place in a well-rated high school, which will not happen in all in the big cities, where the number of places is under demand, and this will generate dramas.

As the technological route has not developed enough to represent for these families an option, which will continue, draws the expert Daniela Vișoianu, is that we will again face a migration of the students, at the end of the 9th grade, from the technological high schools to the theoretical ones.

Next, in the big cities there is a deficit of places in the theoretical high schools, in the sense that there are families with financial resources who have invested in meditations and who have to wait for their children to reach a good high school, at a school where they learn on theoretical profile, either he is real or human, so that he is doing university studies. Next, the rate of development of the alternative route, the technological, professional route, is low. There are families who look more and more attentive to the dual route, but there is a gap between how the alternative route develops, what it means to families and what society needs. We will continue to see drama and we will continue to see a significant migration of students at the end of the 9th grade ”, signals Vișoianu.

These movements will not necessarily be auspicious either for those who eventually reach the desired high school or for the performing students, who in another framework could really develop their ability. Thanks could, on the other hand, be those parents who assume their choice, their children getting to learn in classes with fewer students.

The quality of fixed education for students who are at the top of the hierarchy will decrease. The classes will be larger, the differences between children will be significant, because the current system does not choose an elite, the current system chooses children who have had the best to be trained for this exam. So, instead of seeing, including the centenary colleges, the top, the cream of a generation – children who are intuitive, are smart, have creative capacity, who are investigatives, children who have the ability to self -learn, who plan their own learning, who are self -employed, children who should never be for children, who have to go to what they have to do, Developers, entrepreneurs, that is, create more added value in Romania – we build some classes by a method of selection at the limit of absurdity, for training. And even the best will have the most appropriate learning environment ”, explains Vișoianu.

Expert Marian Stas reports, in addition to the “training” that cannot be ignored when the performances of the students are analyzed, other possible explanations for the progress that emerges from this year. One of these, unfortunately, refers to exceptions.

A simple analysis, with just a few relevant data, highlights what is missing the system to really improve the results. This is the situation at the Curcani High School, from Călărași, the only one in the rural area included in a program of piloting the Romanian educational system. Here the progress is fabulous, from 18.42% average over 5 registered in 2024 now reaching 44.16%.

Marian Stas highlights, giving the example from Curcani, that between putting money in merit scholarships, which has been shown, on analyzing the results from the baccalaureate, that they do not produce spectacular results, and to make curricular transformation and curricular design “how it should”, the second way of working.

Another explanation for several results over 5 is the level of difficulty of the subjects from the Romanian language and literature, given that the subject from mathematics was, says Professor Marian Stas, “reasonable”.

What attracted the attention was the relatively small number of average of 10, only 75, compared to the figures of 2023, for example, when 466 were registered.

This actually shows the decrease in the quality of preparation at the top. Because one is to have 400, 300, 200 and the other is to have 50, 60, 40, as happened at the baccalaureate. This shows, in fact, the deterioration of the quality of education, because you expect good children to be good and enough ”, remark stasis. The decrease so important, for the second year in a row, could have two explanations, says Stas: either they could copy harder, or there are more and more children who, in fact, know less and less book.

Another aspect that deserves to be investigated in detail, believes the expert Marian Stas, is that of the “drain” of the topics shortly after they were presented to the students in the examination room, so that rumors and suspicions have appeared that the resolutions, especially in mathematics, have reached, as quickly, to some of the candidates. “I do not know how systemic the problem is, but it is what we have to verify and represents a question mark.”supports Stas.

“I repeat, I do not want to do an intention process, but I heard, maybe this year, last year it only fought that in a quarter hour the topics were on the net, this time I heard the second part, as they had already returned. Something is not right,” emphasizes the expert.

Finally, the explanation for the big jump compared to the results of last year that the expert Marian Staș mentions is that “The students who prepared became the robot earlier in the process ”through the meditations that developed their instincts to solve the topics built on a known pattern.

Students with very good results will put pressure on the system, and on admission, where there were 30, 40, 50 interested students, 80, 100, or 200 will now be taken, because they allow them. What is interesting to pursue, says Prof. Stas, comes after the beginning of the school year. “We are waiting for the 9th grade, the 10th grade, and let’s see how many of them begin to take 3, 4 and 5 in mathematics, compared to those high notes obtained at the National Assessment. Because, I repeat, in fact nothing has changed ”, Staș said.

A real change, on the other hand, needs good years of implementing new policies, says the expert, and this will not come up with the simple change of the national evaluation exam that is already talked about and which should be the final step. “What means the only way to achieve something else is the transformation of frame plan, the curricular transformation ”concluded Stas.
