Radu Jude, praised in Paris. The complete retrospective of the films of a “restless filmmaker”

Paris will celebrate this autumn two decades of Romanian cinema with Radu Jude. Between September 23 and October 11, 2025, the Pompidou Center and the MK2 chain will host the retrospective of the director’s 28 films, under the generic “Radu Jude, restless filmmaker”.

“Radu Jude, restless filmmaker” – under this sign Paris becomes the arena of a true film travel.

28 titles – fiction, documentary and experiment, signed by one of the most award -winning Romanian directors will be able to be reviewed on the big MK2 screens and Pompidou, from September 23 to October 11, 2025.

After the Brâncuși retrospective last year, Pompidou opens the gates of Romanian art again.

Last year, Pompidou hosted a wide retrospective of Brâncuși, which registered a record number of visitors and reaffirmed the Parisian interest for modernist Romanian art. In the same success formula, the institution, together with MK2, will now give the public a complete panorama of Radu Jude’s cinema.

Conducting the event

Period: September 23 – October 11, 2025

Locations: MK2 halls (MK2 Library) and Pompidou Center, Paris

Official title: “Radu Jude, restless filmmaker”

The collaboration of MK2 (cinemas chain, production house, distribution and restoration laboratory founded by Marin Karmitz) with the Pompidou Center symbolizes an alliance of force in the visual arts and cinema. The project also inaugurates the movement of the film section of Pompidou to the MK2 library, as part of a large modernization process delayed by one year.

What the Pumpidou Center says about Radu Jude

“One of the most stimulating voices of world cinema. The depth and amplitude of his works – from Babardeal with trouble
or Porn hiding (Golden Bear, Berlinale 2021) to Kontinental ’25 (The silver bear for the scenario, 2025) – shakes the collective memory and causes current impasses by the force of the farce ”, is the official description on the website Center Pompidou

Context and meanings

· Strategic partnership: Pumpidou and MK2, two French cultural forces, strengthen the European film infrastructure.

· Moving the film section: The MK2 library will become the new center of film in Paris, responsible for archiving, restoration and cinephile education.

· Visibility for the Romanian cinema: the retrospective offers the French public complete access to a current landmark, much underestimated landmark.

Personal perspectives

In an interview with the culture in the van in 2021, Radu Jude told the story of how he discovered the cinema from high school and how to reject three times when admitting to UNATC has caused him to look for alternatives:

“I started as a director assistant, working with foreign productions in Romania. There I learned that the author’s film requires, in addition to funding, a true film education.”

The director emphasizes the lack of visual literacy in Romania and the importance of continuous cultural infrastructure, as it exists in France – a solid argument in favor of expanding educational projects at national level.

Why does it matter now

This retrospective is not just a simple festival event: it is an alarm signal and a sign of respect. Radu Jude becomes, through the 28 reunited films, a vector that crosses the film forms with agility and courage, inviting the public to look beyond the “comfortable film” and feel the anxiety imposed by art.

Paris brings to light the Romanian creators who change the rules of the game – and moviegoers from all over Europe are called to a contemporary cinema lesson.
