President Nicușor Dan has announced that he has signed, along with other European leaders, a common statement reaffiring firm support for Ukraine and the principles of a sustainable peace, welcoming the involvement of US President Donald Trump in finding a solution to the conflict.

“I greet the efforts of President Donald Trump to contribute to the conclusion of the illegal war triggered by Russia against Ukraine and to build a fair and sustainable peace solution.“, Nicușor Dan said in a post on social networks.

Common statement for peace

The mayor said that, together with the other European leaders, he signed a statement that is clearly stated that “Peace cannot be built without Ukraine, without respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity and without the Ukrainian people freely decide their future. “

Nicușor Dan stressed that support for Ukraine will continue in partnership with European and transatlantic allies: “We will continue to support Ukraine, together with European and transatlantic partners, for a safe, stable and democratic future in the region and for the defense of the values underlying the European project. ”

Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska

President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, next Friday, in Alaska, to continue negotiations to conclude the Ukraine war. No European leader was invited to the discussions scheduled for August 15. However, Trump will carry a telephone call on August 13 with the main European leaders.

Controversial statements before meeting

Trump has repeatedly expressed contradictory opinions about negotiations. On the one hand, he was irritated by the Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, criticizing the need for a constitutional agreement for territorial exchanges.

I was a little disturbed by the fact that Zelenski says: “Well, I have to get the constitutional approval”, “, Trump said. “Has the approval to enter the war and kill everyone but needs approval to make an exchanging territory”.

On the other hand, it has maintained its optimism that the United States can mediate a peace agreement. “We will change the battle lines they need. But I want to establish a meeting between the two leaders (Putin and Zelenski) ”he added.

Trump suggested that discussions with Putin could lead to an exchange of territories, a compromise “unpleasant for both sides ”but that could open the way to an armistice and finally a peace agreement.
