The Romanian doctor from ATI Germany resigns as an advisor after the conflict with the head of anesthetists

A conflict has shaken the medical community in Romania: the president of the Romanian Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Șerban Bubenek, accused the ATI doctor Iuliu Torje, established in Germany, of insulting and discrediting Romanian doctors on social networks and asked for his ban from UMF “Carol Davila” demonstrations. Torje rejects the accusations and announced that he is retiring from the position of honorary adviser to the Ministry of Health in order not to fuel the scandal.

The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, intervened in the scandal between Şerban Bubenek and Iuliu Torje, inviting the two to sit at the table to find their balance, and if this is not possible, then “not to wash away their imbalance in the public space”.

It is a dissension and a scandal between the two, a conflict that has been going on for several years and I do not want to intervene in this scandal between two people. The Romanian Society of Anesthesia-Intensive Therapy is not subordinate to the Ministry of Health. I invite both of them to settle their discussions. It seems unfair to me, it seems sad to me that the image of the health system in Romania is in the middle of this conflict between two people. I invite both of them to sit at the table, discuss and find their balance. And if they don’t find their balance, don’t wash their imbalance in the public space“, the Minister of Health sent.

Following this reaction, Dr. Iuliu Torje sent, on Sunday, a public message in which he thanked Minister Alexandru Rogobete for the way he managed the tensions and announced that he was resigning from the position of honorary advisor.

Torje stated that he is grateful to the minister for the trust he placed in him when he proposed to become an honorary advisor, stressing that he treated this role “with respect and seriousness”. He also stated that the minister did not give in to the pressure and that “there was no intention to revoke after two weeks”, contrary to public speculation. However, in the context of increasing tensions, the doctor decided to give up the position of honorary adviser in order not to affect the activity of the Ministry of Health.

“For this reason, I communicated to him my decision to withdraw from the position of honorary adviser, in order to protect the smooth functioning of the ministry’s activity and to avoid any interpretations that could affect the professional agenda of the institution”, explained Iuliu Torje.

The conflict between Iuliu Torje and Șerban Bubenek escalated after Bubenek accused Torje of insulting and defaming Romanian doctors on social networks, requesting that he be declared persona non grata at all events of the UMF “Carol Davila”. Bubenek also disputes Torje’s professional training, claiming that he is not a member of the College of Physicians in Romania and has no right to practice here.

In response, Torje rejects the accusations, considers them “aberrant and disconnected from reality” and decided to withdraw from the EST Bucharest Congress and from all educational projects in Romania in order not to fuel the scandal.
