Former president Traian Băsescu declared on Thursday evening, January 22, that “Trump is a liar.” pretending not to know that NATO troops did not intervene to help the US in the various conflicts. According to him, Trump “he hopes that there are generations that did not grasp the wars”, which he can lie to.
In Davos, President Donald Trump inaugurated the “Council for Peace”, an initiative proposed by him and addressed to around 60 other world leaders, including US allies and authoritarian leaders such as Vladimir Putin, Aleksandr Lukashenko or Xi Jinping.
The former president sees “Council for Peace” inaugurated by Trump as a “toy” created for himself.
“I see this committee as a toy that Trump is making for himself and he is looking for an important position at the global level. Thank God for the European intelligence that he did not rush this committee.
I am glad that Romania waited, it will have a concerted position with the EU states, because we live here, not with Trump. We live in a union that is a solution for our lives and the generations to come.” said Traian Băsescu on B1TV.
In his Davos speech, Trump also launched a series of criticisms of NATO, accusing the alliance of “treating” the US unfairly.
“We give so much and get so little in return, and I’ve been a critic of NATO for many years, and yet I’ve done more to help NATO than any other president before. You wouldn’t have NATO if I hadn’t been involved in my first term.”Trump added.
Traian Băsescu accuses Trump of lying, because “you can’t say Trump doesn’t know that during his term we weren’t in Afghanistan with 1,000 troops on the border with Pakistan,” referring to the presence of Romanian troops.
“You can’t say that he doesn’t know that there were European states, and Romania, that were in Iraq. It’s clear that he’s lying, he probably hopes that there are generations that haven’t caught the wars, to fool the children”, the former president emphasized.
“In Greenland, Trump makes a play to become master”
He is relieved that the US president has stopped his threats to occupy Greenland by force, but points out that Trump is known to be inconsistent.
“If he had invaded Greenland, NATO would have ended. Trump has an access agreement to the territory of Greenland since 1951. This agreement is not denounced, it does not prevent him from setting up military bases. I think the problem is different.
In Venezuela, the stake was not Maduro, but the billions of barrels of crude and oil. In Greenland, Trump is making a play to become master of an area where there are deposits of rare metals. Here is all the play he does. Better to tell him honestly, he might get a concession to pay obeisance to Greenland or the Danish state,” explained the former president.
Băsescu says that Romania must remain firmly anchored in the EU, which is “house” and its political priority, even as it maintains a strategic relationship and partnership with the US.
“This is the policy area of zero importance. It does not prevent us from strengthening the strategic partnership with the US, but they must also want to. I do not know when Trump will have the sense to look at the Black Sea region,” the former president also stated.
