Worrying rise in flu mortality. Last week there were 20 deaths

20 people died last week in Romania due to the flu, while the number of respiratory infections continues to increase during this period of the cold season, according to INSP.

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported on Thursday that, between January 12 and 18, twenty people lost their lives due to the flu, raising the toll to 40 deaths caused by this disease since the beginning of the season.

In the same week, 96,582 cases of respiratory infections, including clinical influenza, acute upper respiratory tract infections (IACRS) and pneumonia, were registered nationwide. This is a 30.7% increase from the previous week, when 73,880 cases were reported, but a 23% decrease from the same week last season, when 125,452 cases were reported. The negative variation compared to the average of the last seasons, calculated at 109,832 cases (2018–2025, excluding pandemic seasons), was 12.1%, notes Agerpres.

During the same period, 163 cases of influenza were confirmed by the laboratory, of which 57 with influenza virus AH3, 13 with influenza virus AH1 and 93 with influenza A virus not subtyped.

Regarding immunization, until January 18, 1,287,313 flu vaccinations were reported in the National Electronic Register of Vaccinations, of which 1,260,967 were carried out for the population groups that benefit from settlement under the compensated regime. Also, 6,062 people were vaccinated in authorized community pharmacies.
