The final form of the structure of the school year 2026–2027 has been approved. According to the approved calendar, classes will start on September 7, 2026 and end on June 18, 2027, with the school year having a total duration of 36 weeks of classes.
The holiday at the decision of the county school inspectorates and the Bucharest municipality will be scheduled between February 15 and March 7, 2027. Until April 1, 2026, each educational unit has the obligation to communicate to students and parents the holiday week chosen at the county level.
Also, the national programs “School differently” and “Green Week” will take place between September 7, 2026 and April 23, 2027, being included in the structure of the school year.
The Ministry of Education and Research specifies that the proposals regarding the beginning of the school year on September 15 and its end on June 15, as well as those regarding the elimination or merging of the “Different School” and “Green Week” programs, were analyzed, but not adopted. Eliminating these programs would not have reduced the number of course weeks, as they are already included in the total of 36 weeks.
At the same time, starting classes a week later would have caused the end of the school year to be delayed until June 25, 2027, which would have had the effect of postponing the national exams – the National Assessment and the Baccalaureate – by a week.
“It is in the best interest of the child that the written tests of the national exams are not delayed, considering the subsequent stages, such as high school admission for 8th grade graduates and college admission for 12th grade graduates”show the representatives of the ministry.
Maintaining programs “School differently” and “Green Week” it is justified by their role in creating a framework for activities that combine theory with practical applications in everyday life. The Ministry emphasizes that these objectives can also be achieved through free activities carried out in the school, using the available resources.
The authorities call on educational institutions to capitalize on these programs for the benefit of children and the educational community, both for learning in non-formal contexts and the socio-emotional development of students, as well as for strengthening the partnership between the school, parents and the community.
The order regarding the approval of the structure of the school year 2026–2027 will be published in the Official Gazette and will later be available on the website of the Ministry of Education and Research.
