Romania is going through a period of uncertainty in the field of education, after the position of Minister of Education remained vacant, following the expiration of the interim mandate exercised by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
In this context, the rector of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Daniel David, sent an optimistic message to the academic community, on the occasion of the beginning of spring.
“Spring begins not only in nature, but also in the way we want to see the world. We cannot influence the times we live in, but we can control how we react to them, through our thoughts, values and decisions.” the rector emphasized in his message.
The call for reflection and responsibility comes in a year marked by difficulties for the education system. In the absence of a Minister of Education, a number of important decisions for pupils and students are delayed to be adopted. The prime minister had announced on February 4 that he would announce the name of the new minister “next week”, but as of mid-February, no official candidate had been proposed, according to transtelex. Ilie Bolojan admitted that the current context makes it difficult to identify a suitable person for this position.
In parallel, the university system is preparing for a major change. From the fall of 2026, tuition fees at Babeș-Bolyai University will increase, to be harmonized with the level of state funding established by law – 6,500 lei per year for bachelor’s and master’s programs.
Rector Daniel David believes, however, that this adjustment can represent an opportunity for development, despite the difficulties it could entail for students.
“In this year, which continues to be difficult for all of us and for the entire country, let us enjoy the beauty of spring, look at challenges as opportunities for growth, and strengthen and shape our character!”the rector also transmitted, quoted by Transtelex.
In the same letter, Daniel David drew a parallel between the return of spring and the process of personal development, pointing out that, just as nature defeats the cold, human character is formed through trials and making daily decisions.
