Romania took first place in Europe and second place worldwide at EGMO 2026, a competition with 247 competitors from 66 countries. Four students won medals, informed the Ministry of Education.
The Ministry of Education and Research announced on Tuesday the results obtained by the Romanian team at the European Mathematical Olympiad for Girls 2026 (EGMO), held in Bordeaux, France, from April 9-15.
“First place in Europe for Romania at the European Mathematical Olympiad for Girls 2026 (EGMO) and second in the country ranking (after China, participant with guest status), in a competition that brought together 247 competitors from 66 countries!”the Ministry sent in a message posted on its Facebook page.
According to the cited source, during the competition, the Romanian students obtained medals as follows:
Mălina-Carla Pavel“Alexandru Odobescu” National College Pitesti, gold medal, the highest score among the participants from the official countries;
Aida MitroiInternational Theoretical High School of Informatics, Bucharest, gold medal;
Carina Maria ViespescuInternational Theoretical High School of Informatics, Bucharest, gold medal;
Ioana StroeInternational Theoretical Informatics High School, Bucharest, bronze medal.
The competition was coordinated by Andrei Eckstein, a lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Timișoara, and Anca Băltărigă, a teacher at the International High School of Informatics in Bucharest.
“This international mathematics Olympiad opens the series of four international mathematics Olympiads in which Romania participates in the 2025-2026 school year.”
The scientific coordination of the batch was ensured by the Romanian Society of Mathematical Sciences, and the organization on the part of the Ministry was carried out by MEC inspector Naghi Elisabeta Ana.
“The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of our country’s national teams in the international Olympics by covering participation fees and travel costs, per diem related to the days of stay, as well as in the organization and running of the stages preceding the international Olympics – the local/county/municipal and national stages of these competitions”it is also shown in the message.
