President Nicușor Dan declared, during an official visit to Gdańsk, that the reform of the institutions cannot be done through a permanent rhetoric of confrontation with the “system”, especially when the state leader is in the very position of leading it.

“Between a dog that barks and a dog that bites, I prefer a dog that bites”

“I think 20 years of fighting the system is a certainty. You can’t fight the system when you’re the head of the system. The question is how can we reform the system without taking this country into anarchy. That’s the mission I’ve undertaken. To make a reform, between a dog that barks and a dog that bites, I prefer a dog that bites. Between declaiming about how loudly we’re going to reform the system, that we have a lot of declaimers, and between having tools to really reform the system, I always, as I did at the Capital City Hall, hope to put myself in a position to have tools to reform the system”, said Nicușor Dan.

He also drew attention to the risk of radicalization of the domestic political debate and emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear line between pro-Western orientation and anti-Western temptations.

“If we want to move to a more political area, it is very important to preserve, to draw the line of demarcation between pro-Western and anti-Western and not to consume our energies in a fight within a pro-Western vision. This is what I also said in the election campaign, when I criticized the system”, said the president Nicușor Dan.

Asked if the head of the system can deliver honest Romania, Nicusor Dan answered: “Yes, in time. In time, and without producing anarchy.”
