An American tourist from Florida, a state known for high temperatures and high humidity, says that the experience of a vacation spent in Croatia at the end of June made him give up the idea of visiting Europe again during the summer. His message, published on the Reddit platform, sparked hundreds of reactions, including from locals, who acknowledged that the current heat wave is one of the most severe in recent years.
According to the Croatian State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ), June was warmer than the multi-year average in almost the entire country, and extreme heatwave conditions were recorded in some regions.
An American from Florida shared his experience after about two weeks on the Croatian coast. “I think we’re done with European summers”he began his message.
“Maybe I’m exaggerating, but this heat wave is really unbearable. I haven’t had a chance to really cool off my body for two weeks and I feel like it’s slowly draining me. I live in Florida, which is known for its hot and humid summers, but this is just too much! I’ve been to Western Europe once in mid-July, and I’ve promised myself that I’ll avoid July and August in the future. Now I’ve had the opportunity to visit Croatia and I thought, ‘Hey, it’s only June, I guess the worst is yet to come’. Unless you’re in the water or in the shower, you never really get a chance to cool off, which is amazing to me, considering I’m on the coast.” wrote the American tourist.
He says that although he is used to hot summers in Florida and has traveled to many destinations, the temperatures in Croatia affected him more than he expected.
“I’m sure some will call me spoiled or say I’m exaggerating, but I’ve traveled a lot and I think as I get older, it’s getting harder and harder for me to put up with such conditions. This time, the feeling went from ‘Wow, it’s hot’ to ‘I’m sweating so much I might need to see a doctor when I get back.'”“, he added.
“You are not spoiled, I understand you perfectly”
The American’s post garnered hundreds of comments, and many users, including Croatians, said they shared his impressions.
“You’re not spoiled, I understand you perfectly. I’m Croatian by the way. This is probably the worst end of June I can remember,” one user commented.
Others have warned that such heatwave episodes will become more frequent due to climate change.
“The most depressing thing is that heat waves like this are only going to get worse.”another netizen wrote.
Several Europeans have said they have already changed their holiday plans due to rising temperatures in the south of the continent.
“I’m European too, and I’m sick of European summers. For years I’ve avoided July and August and traveled in May and June. But in the last two years, even May and June have become unbearably hot. September is now the only good choice, and even April is becoming more and more attractive.”another user wrote.
