Elon Musk offered to finance with 100 million dollars an adaptation of “The Odyssey” directed by Mel Gibson, in the context in which he has been criticizing Christopher Nolan for months.
The billionaire once again sparked backlash on X after responding to a user who had made a highly specific proposal for an alternative adaptation of Homer’s epic poem.
“I want Elon Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film an adaptation of The Odyssey with meticulously historically accurate ships, armor, weapons and cast, with all dialogue taken directly from the original poem and spoken in Homeric Greek”the user wrote.
Musk replied: “I’m for it.”
The comment comes just a few hours after the head of Tesla and SpaceX announced another ambitious project related to “Odyssey”this time one of his own, writes Metro.co.uk.
Musk said his artificial intelligence platform Grok Imagine will create a feature film adaptation of Homer’s epic before the end of the year.
“Before the end of this year, Grok Imagine will make a feature film inspired by The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to Homer’s art”he wrote, sharing an AI-generated video featuring Odysseus and the nymph Calipso.
The flurry of posts marks the latest chapter in Musk’s increasingly personal campaign against the version “The Odyssey” made by Christopher Nolan.
Long before the film hit theaters, Musk repeatedly criticized the Oscar-winning director’s casting choices, including the fact that black actress and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is playing Helen of Troy, considered the most beautiful woman in the world, instead of a white woman. He also questioned the masculinity of the role played in the film by trans actor Elliot Page – mistakenly identified by Musk as the famous Greek warrior Achilles.
In May, Musk publicly endorsed criticism of Nyong’o’s election, agreeing with a post by conservative commentator Matt Walsh. He also accused Nolan of chasing the awards and claimed that the director “lost its integrity”.
But all of Musk’s criticisms had little effect on the film’s success.
With Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, “Odyssey” it was met with rave reviews and grossed $264m (£198m) worldwide in its opening weekend, while also scoring a 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
So far, Gibson has given no indication that he would be interested in returning to ancient Greece, let alone directing a $100 million epic set entirely in Homeric Greek, the publication also notes.
