The men’s team final at the Commonwealth Games was overshadowed by a dramatic moment after British gymnast Gabriel Langton suffered a serious injury during the balance beam exercise.
The 19-year-old athlete, who is in the England team, was performing in the last round of the competition in Glasgow. In an attempt to perform a spectacular breakaway element on the fixed bar, Langton lost his grip on the bar and fell about three meters, hitting his head and neck hard.
The competition was stopped immediately, and the medical team intervened urgently. As spectators and other athletes quietly watched the medics’ intervention, the gymnast remained conscious, able to communicate and move his limbs before being immobilized with a cervical collar and transported to hospital for further investigation.

A few hours after the incident, representatives of British Gymnastics announced that the condition of Gabriel Langton is stable. The gymnast was transported to the hospital for safety reasons and remained hospitalized overnight for further investigations. Following medical examinations and scans, doctors confirmed that the athlete did not suffer serious injuries. According to the British federation, the results were encouraging and Langton is due to be discharged and return to the hotel where the England delegation is staying.

Gabriel Langton’s accident strongly affected his colleagues, who had to continue their developments shortly after the resumption of the contest. Luke Whitehouse, the next scheduled gymnast on the balance beam, admitted that it was very difficult for him to concentrate after what happened. The athlete said that the whole team decided to do a short warm-up before returning to the competition, to try to regain their composure. Whitehouse said the support of colleagues was hugely important in those moments and said the latest news about Langton was encouraging, according to the BBC.
