In the context of the repeated incidents with drones originating from the war zone in Ukraine, Oana Țoiu highlighted Italy’s support for Romania, materialized by sending Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft and a military detachment.
Against the backdrop of increasingly frequent incidents in which drones from the war zone in Ukraine arrive near or enter Romania’s airspace, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, says that the support of the allies played an important role. In this sense, she pointed to Italy as one of the first states to respond with concrete measures after the incident with the Russian drone in Galați.
“One of the first strong allies of this diplomatic effort was Italy. The solidarity between the allies is also manifested through official statements, they have a great real force but one that is not always easy to translate immediately for the citizens or in direct benefits. Sometimes, however, concrete decisions taken on the basis of friendship between countries can be seen immediately”. wrote Oana Țoiu on her Facebook page.
The minister specified that, after the discussions that followed the incident in Galați, where a drone hit a block of flats, injuring two people, Italy increased its military presence in Romania, so that, in June, a detachment of 180 soldiers, pilots and technical personnel, together with four Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, arrived at the Mihail Kogălniceanu base.
Italian planes carried out air police missions under NATO command alongside the Romanian Air Force. Two of these aircraft were also seized in the case of the drone that recently entered Romanian airspace, in Buzău County.
“Two of these planes tracked the drone yesterday and this is important for strengthening the interoperability between the Romanian and allied Air Forces. We are all proud of the Romanian pilot – the credit belongs to him and is accompanied by excellent coordination and teamwork with the allies”, transmitted Oana Țoiu.
Oana Țoiu also said that she talked with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, whom she thanked for the support given to Romania. For his part, the Italian official reaffirmed his support for NATO’s presence on the eastern flank.
“These days I thanked the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, and he in turn expressed the continuation of the presence on the eastern flank and the support for Romania”, the interim foreign minister also wrote.
At the same time, Oana Țoiu also announced that, in autumn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will organize together with the General Secretariat of the Central European Initiative in Italy a ministerial conference of the member states. Among the topics discussed will be defense cooperation, including combating disinformation.
“In autumn, together with the General Secretariat of the Central European Initiative in Italy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will jointly host a ministerial conference of the member countries, where we will also discuss the Common Defense component by combating disinformation”, stated Oana Țoiu.
