Waze has accelerated the rollout of the feature that displays traffic lights on the map, giving drivers more time to slow down and approach intersections carefully.
The first reports of traffic lights appearing in Waze surfaced in the spring, but the Google-owned company never made an official announcement about the feature.
The feature became available to early users a while ago, but the rollout seems to be expanding at a faster pace. More and more users have confirmed on Reddit that traffic lights have started appearing in their regions.
However, an important aspect is that the availability of traffic lights in Waze does not depend on a particular version of the application. Therefore, even if you install the latest version available in the app store, the traffic lights may not appear, writes autoevolution.com
Why traffic lights do not appear for all users
The reason is that local map publishers need to add the traffic light locations in that region. Waze relies on a large community of map users and editors, and they contribute to updating maps with permanent elements of road infrastructure, such as speed limits and traffic lights.
While some data could be imported from Google Maps — Google’s other navigation app already displays traffic lights, so there’s a database that could be used — map publishers must check and validate each traffic light before it can appear in Waze.
Users can help speed up the process by joining the community of map publishers in their region or reaching out to existing publishers to learn how they can help get the feature ready faster. Otherwise, the only option is to wait for the map update to complete.
How traffic lights are displayed in the app
In Waze, traffic lights appear on the map via a dedicated icon when the app is in use. Users do not receive on-screen notifications similar to those displayed in the event of hazards such as accidents or railway level crossings. Therefore, the only way to know that they are approaching a traffic light is to check the app screen.
Waze is unlikely to change this behavior, as notifying users about every traffic light could generate an excessive number of alerts, especially in cities where traffic lights are very frequent.
“STOP” signs, the next feature analyzed by Waze
The next similar update that might start rolling out is the display of indicators “STOP”. Waze previously confirmed that it is looking into adding these markers to the map as well, but did not provide an estimated time frame for the feature’s launch. Such a feature could be useful as it would give drivers an extra warning to slow down when approaching an intersection.
For example, Apple Maps already offers indicators for traffic lights and “STOP” in the United States, but the availability of these features remains very limited in other regions of the world.
