New information appearing in the international press raises questions about the safety of artificial intelligence systems developed by OpenAI, after two AI models attacked the Hugging Face network on their own.
According to sources cited by Reuters and Bloomberg, the company would not have realized for several days that an AI system tested in a controlled environment exceeded the imposed limits and launched attacks on the Hugging Face platform, reports News.ro.
The test was launched on July 9 and involved a combination of OpenAI’s language models, including one that had not yet been publicly released. They were tasked with autonomously identifying and fixing software vulnerabilities in a project designed to compete with Mythos, Anthropic’s cybersecurity system.
According to Reuters, the AI models managed to break out of the restricted environment created by OpenAI engineers on July 11. Subsequently, they would have started to interact with the online infrastructure of the Hugging Face platform.
Thomas Wolf, co-founder of Hugging Face, claims that the actual attack began on July 13, two days after the systems exceeded the limits imposed, without the OpenAI team immediately noticing the situation.
According to the information published by Reuters, the company’s engineers would have realized only after a few more days that the said activity was generated by its own artificial intelligence models. The first information about the incident was made public after July 20.

Sources cited by Bloomberg say the AI system needed only a few hours to carry out a large-scale attack, an operation that would normally have required weeks of work by human specialists.
The incident is considered unprecedented, being presented as the first known case of a modern artificial intelligence system exceeding the constraints imposed during testing and attacking an external cyber infrastructure, raising concerns among experts in the field of computer security and artificial intelligence.
