The general health strike had an unwanted effect at the Buzău County Emergency Hospital, where some of the patients who could not be consulted in the Outpatient Department went to the Emergency Reception Unit, further crowding its activity.
Dozens of hospital employees, members of the Sanitas Federation, went on indefinite strike on Tuesday. They claim problems related to salaries, working conditions and lack of staff, reports Agerpres.
“Patients came despite the fact that we announced that we were on strike, and because they were not seen, exactly a boomerang effect happened, that is, they migrated from the outpatient department to the emergency department, UPU”, said the leader of Sanitas Buzău, Grațiela Constantin.
Trade unionists claim a large staff shortage
One of the main employee grievances is hiring freezes. According to the leader of Sanitas Buzău, the real shortage of personnel in SJU Buzău would be greater than that indicated by official data.
Employees say the understaffing has also led to the accumulation of a large number of unused vacation days and the burnout of those who continue to work.
Diana Cotorceanu, a medical assistant in the Dialysis ward, says that she has approximately 60 days of unpaid leave and that, in the last four years, she has only been able to take short periods of five days each.
“An assistant takes care of the work of three missing people. (…) We are very exhausted, very tired, we need understanding and support from everyone“, she declared.
Emergencies are covered during the strike
The manager of SJU Buzău, Claudiu Damian, stated that he supports the demands of the staff, but that the hospital has taken measures to ensure that emergencies are still treated.
“All emergencies are taken care of, fractures, the UPU is open, receives patients, the staff is on strike but is present at work and a third provides medical services“, he specified.
According to the manager, the activity is ensured by staff rotation, and at UPU, ATI and Oncology there are no problems in terms of treating patients.
The trade unionists announced that the strike is indefinite and will continue until the Government responds to the demands of the employees.
