The National School of Political and Administrative Studies (SNSPA) marked on Monday, July 27, 70 years since Romania’s accession to UNESCO.
“In the last seven decades, Romania has consolidated its status as an active partner of UNESCO, contributing to the promotion of the principles that define the organization: peace, intercultural dialogue, quality education, protection of cultural and natural heritage, freedom of expression and the development of knowledge.
These values also represent fundamental benchmarks of the academic mission assumed by SNSPA”, transmits the university institution in a press release.
SNSPA reminds that, in November 2023, Romania took over the presidency of the UNESCO General Conference for the first time, after the ambassador Simona-Mirela Miculescu was unanimously elected as the president of the organization’s highest decision-making body.
“At the same time, Romania exercises the mandate of being a member of the UNESCO Executive Council for the period 2025-2029, confirming the international recognition of its contribution to the achievement of the organization’s objectives.”
The rector of SNSPA, Remus Pricopie, declared that the 70th anniversary of Romania’s accession to UNESCO reflects the country’s contribution to international cooperation in education, science and culture.
“The evolution of Romania within UNESCO is the result of a constant institutional collaboration, supported by the National Commission of Romania for UNESCO, under the coordination of the Ministry of Education, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.
Throughout these seven decades, Romania has demonstrated that it can participate in defining the major themes on the international agenda, promoting dialogue, solidarity, respect for diversity and the democratic values that are the basis of the United Nations Organization.
This course confirms the fact that Romania is a credible and responsible partner, able to contribute, through expertise and dialogue, to the consolidation of international cooperation and to the promotion of the values that UNESCO represents them”, declared the SNSPA rector.
SNSPA emphasizes that it has a long tradition of collaboration with UNESCO, through international projects in the field of education, research and innovation, involvement in the organization of the UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education since 2009 and partnerships with directors-general and other high-ranking officials of the organization.
“SNSPA’s commitment to UNESCO’s values is also reflected in its research work. In December 2025, UNESCO launched the global report World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development 2022–2025: Journalism Shaping a World at Peace, a landmark document highlighting the evolution of freedom of expression and media development worldwide.
Experts from the Center for the Promotion of Participation and Democracy (CPD) within SNSPA also contributed to the elaboration of the report, benefiting from the support of the UNESCO Chair for Science and Innovation Policy and Her Excellency, Mrs. Ambassador Simona-Mirela Miculescu. This contribution reflects the involvement of the academic community of SNSPA in international research projects and in the promotion of freedom of expression, democracy and the fundamental values supported by UNESCO.
70 years after Romania’s accession to UNESCO, SNSPA looks at this anniversary with the responsibility of continuing to contribute to the promotion of knowledge, dialogue and international cooperation.
