Winner of the European Champions League, in the spring, Paris Saint-Germain won the European Super Cup for the second time in a row. In a match played this evening, in Salzburg (Austria), the French team won 2-1 (1-1) against Aston Villa, the holder of the Europa League.
PSG opened the scoring through Hvicea Kvaraţhelia (min. 20), and Aston Villa equalized through Brian Madjo (min. 45), the young 17-year-old striker in his first official match for the English team.
The final result was set by Doue, who scored in the 61st minute.
Champions of Europe, the formation from the “City of Light” also showed up for the match as the holder of the Super Cup. PSG prevailed in the previous edition after a dispute with Tottenham that ended 2-2, the winner being decided on penalty kicks (4-3).
Aston Villa was left with a trophy in the European Super Cup which they won after the “double” with Barcelona (0-1 at Camp Nou and 3-0 after extra time at Villa Park) in 1982.
The most trophies were won by Real Madrid – 6, Barcelona – 5, AC Milan – 5, Liverpool – 4 and Atletico Madrid – 3.
Bayern Munich, Chelsea London, Ajax Amsterdam, Anderlecht, Valencia and Juventus Turin also have two trophies in the European Super Cup.
Among the 26 teams that have won the European Supercup is Steaua Bucharest, which prevailed in the limit (1-0) in the dispute with Dinamo Kiev, in 1987. Thanks to that success achieved by the goal scored by Hagi from a free kick, Romania is among the 13 nations that have teams that awarded the trophy.
The match was refereed by Somali Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the US by Customs and Border Protection even though he had a valid visa and was one of the officials who were to officiate at the World Cup. Aged 34, he refereed the CAF Champions League final and was named CAF Referee of the Year. UEFA communicated the fact that Artan’s appointment was made on the basis of a cooperation agreement signed with CAF this year to strengthen the collaboration between the two confederations. “It was a very difficult period. A lot of people sympathize with me because when someone works very hard for years in a row and has to do something and then can’t, it’s very difficult,” said Artan, who added: “I believe that if I could succeed, anyone can. Don’t stop dreaming.”
