Cîrstea (33 years old, 24 WTA), number 19 seed, won in 52 minutes, after the match was interrupted on Friday, due to the rain, at the score of 5-2. Stephens (31, 41 WTA) won the title in Miami in 2018.

The 2017 US Open champion and Sorana Cîrstea met on this occasion for the fifth time (2-2), three of the duels taking place this year. Sorana prevailed in the first round in Doha, with 6-2, 6-3, and Stephens got revenge in Indian Wells with 6-0, 7-5.

Cîrstea, who won a check for 59,100 dollars and 65 WTA points, will play in the third round against the Russian Daria Kasatkina, who took advantage of the withdrawal of the American Claire Liu (6-0, 1-0).

Kasatkina (26 years old, 11 WTA) is 2-1 in head-to-head matches with Cîrstea, whom she defeated again this year, in the quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi, 6-2, 6-0.
