The former head of the SRI, Eduard Hellvig, claims, in the context of the global security situation, that diplomacy has exhausted its resources, and the West is preparing for the worst.

The former head of the SRI reviews global events, such as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the multiple elections during 2024.

“In October, Iran supported the Houthi rebels in Yemen to launch strikes on Israel. At the same time, it supported Hamas to wreak havoc with surprise raids and rocket attacks, which provoked a strong reaction from Israel. Iran is deepening the fog of war by inciting militias from Syria and Iraq in harassing Israel.

We were talking about 2024 as the year in which half the world's population goes to the polls. With the map in front of us, some choices will be pure hatred and ideology. On February 7, we were talking here about the current year as the “dragon of all years”, with multiple heads that will spit fire and wave swords.

We are after two years of war in Ukraine and we are beginning to understand what “war fatigue” means in the West. We are six months into the conflict in the Middle East and all the signals are converging towards an Iran that feels strong enough to stop acting through intermediaries.” wrote Eduard Hellvig on X.

Hellvig points out that the West is preparing for the worst.

“Diplomacy seems to be rapidly exhausting its resources, while all Western chancelleries and military analysts are preparing for the worst. One of those moments where you wish you weren't right.” concludes the former head of the SRI.

Iran launched a large-scale attack on Israel on the night of Saturday to Sunday, with more than three hundred drones and missiles, almost all of which were intercepted by the Israeli army. The attack drew criticism from Western heads of state.
