Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru, named music director of one of the most important orchestras in America

Cristian Măcelaru, one of the most acclaimed conductors in the world and winner of a Grammy Award, will conduct the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, an extremely acclaimed one, almost 130 years old.

Winner of numerous international awards, Cristian Măcelaru will be music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from this fall, where, after a term as “designated music director” (2024 – 2025), he will have a four-year mandate. Cristian Măcelaru will replace the Frenchman Louis Langrée, who has held the position for the last 10 years.

With a history dating back to 1895, the Cincinnati orchestra is the oldest in the state of Ohio and the sixth oldest in the United States.

Born in Romania, in Timișoara, Cristian Măcelaru proved an exceptional musical talent from childhood, playing in the church orchestra and participating in national and international violin competitions. From the age of 17 he settled in the United States of America, studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and at the Universities of Miami and Rice, and in 2019 he obtained American citizenship.

Since September 2021, Cristian Măcelaru is the music director of the National Orchestra of France, one of the most important orchestras in the world, which he conducted for the first time almost six years ago, in Paris.
