Edwards, who has spoken about significant events in the United Kingdom since the early 2000s, will appear in a London court on Wednesday, July 31, to answer the charges against him, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.

The three counts relate to images Edwards shared via WhatsApp between December 2020 and April 2022.

The former presenter was placed in custody on November 8, 2023 and was indicted on June 26, according to the same source.

Huw Edwards had been at the helm of the evening news for two decades before the scandal broke last summer. He was accused of paying a minor in exchange for sexual images.

The scandal, made public in the tabloid The Sun, held the front page of the British press. The name of the BBC presenter was not initially revealed.

Edwards was later hospitalized for depression.

The authorities reported a year ago that they had not come across any evidence to show that a crime had been committed. Then, the presenter stopped presenting the news and announced his resignation in April.

Huw Edwards has long been one of the BBC’s best-known and best-paid presenters. He was the one who announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022. He also commented on the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton, the opening of the 2012 London Olympics and the coronation of Britain’s King Charles III .
