“A Hidden Hydra”. Shocking discovery in woman’s abdomen: “There was an extremely dangerous monster, feeding on the patient’s life”

Shocking discovery in the operating room: Seven undiagnosed tumors were found in the abdomen of a patient who had come to the hospital for a routine operation. “What I was seeing wasn’t supposed to be there, but there was a monster there, a hidden hydra feeding on the patient’s life”said the surgeon Constantin Truș, who led the intervention.

The patient, an approximately 60-year-old woman, was sent to the Galati County Hospital by the gynecologist for the surgical treatment of a uterine fibroid associated with ovarian cysts.

Doctor Constantin Truș, the one who led the entire intervention, reported how a seemingly routine operation turned into a real surgical marathon.

“I looked at the results of the patient’s medical history: gynecological examination, endovaginal ultrasound, yes, and an MRI that confirmed the diagnosis. Everything was quite recent, at a clinic, the investigations bearing a medical initial. I talked with the patient and told her that in this situation a laparoscopic hysterectomy is necessary, an operation that will reduce her current pain and discomfort to zero, the recovery being fast and without major postoperative complications. The same outcome was true for complications related to ovarian cysts, eliminating, as they say, the evil at the source. I also looked at the rest of the tests, including the set of tumor markers, everything looked good.” reported surgeon Constantin Truș, on his Facebook page.

The shocking moment was when the laparoscopic camera was inserted into the woman’s abdomen. The operation, which was supposed to last several tens of minutes, turned into a real marathon. During the intervention, the doctor discovered several tumors, which put his life in danger.

“What I was seeing was not supposed to exist, but there it was … a monster, a hidden and extremely dangerous hydra feeding on the patient’s life. I removed the first head of the hydra and the largest, the first tumor discovered, while ensuring visibility and room for movement. Next came the uterus, already compromised by massive cysts. I cut, removed, ligated the vascular pedicles, and moved on, until I could no longer visually perceive anything. One by one, I removed all the heads, five in number. Tactilely I discovered two more smaller formations at the level of the intestine and removed them without much trouble.” said Dr. Trus.

Only after she no longer felt any formation, the medical team could close the patient’s abdomen.

“Time didn’t matter anymore, an operation that was supposed to last a few tens of minutes turned into hours of searching, multiple interventions and the step-by-step dismantling of an unexpected, cruel and absurd situation. I didn’t know how many tumors I had removed… It was only then that I breathed a sigh of relief, and so did the team.” said the surgeon.

At this time, the patient is waiting for the results “biopsy of the tumor masses sent to the laboratory”and the surgeon wonders how it was possible that such a “hydra” of tumors to go undetected by all previously performed investigations.

“I left the gym still unable to explain to myself how such a thing was possible of the tumor to go undetected by any investigation. As gently as I explained to the patient the next day, everything was a shock. The large number of tumors, their mass as well as the fact that they were not detected despite all the investigations done at large clinics in the country, still remain a mystery. Depending on the results, it will be decided if additional oncological treatment is needed”Dr. Constantin Truș also transmitted.
