A new spike on OLX: how a Bucharest resident was left with no money on Revolut, and no sneakers

A Bucharest resident warns of the risks of online transactions after being the victim of a scam following the sale of a pair of sneakers on the OLX platform.

According to his post on Reddit, it all started when he was contacted by a buyer interested in his product on OLX who claimed that he was in a hurry to leave the country and wanted the product as soon as possible. The seller insisted on paying through the app system, but the buyer insisted on transferring the money directly.

Although the seller admits that the transaction seemed strange to him, he continued, sending the sneakers to the buyer through a ridesharing app, especially since he had even received 100 lei more than the original price, to increase his confidence.

“Until I can send him the sneakers, I tell him that I send them via Uber Delivery, he is also from Bucharest, and he sends me 100 lei more than I asked for them”says the user on Reddit. “Finally ask him to order bolt delivery from me to him, I don’t know his address, I also put his sneakers and 100 lei in the order that I give to the bolt driver”, he added.

The next day, he found that the money sent by bank transfer was blocked. After an hour of discussion with the bank’s support, it was found that there was not enough evidence to recover the amount. Following the incident, the seller was left with no sneakers and no money, and the buyer deleted his OLX account and cannot be contacted in any way.

“I know I was careless, even naive, but I’m sharing with you so you don’t end up like me: sell strictly through OLX or face to face, cash in hand”the user concludes his message.
