Actress Tily Niculae’s daughter, Sofia, suffered a stroke in the fall of 2023. The incident began with a simple headache at school, which quickly worsened. The actress has only now decided to publicly share this shocking experience.
In an interview for OK! Magazine, Tily Niculae stated that she “ended a very difficult year”.
“In September 2023, Sofia suffered a stroke. Fortunately, it was a temporary one…“, confessed the artist, with tears in her eyes.
“It’s just that one day I went to pick her up from school and she said she had a headache – which I put down to screen time or tiredness, that she started going to bed later and that the pressure at school is now greater, plus the heat that has always been there. And I told him to go take a bath and rest. However, by the time we got home, he told me that he couldn’t see with his right eye anymore, and what happened next came in an avalanche: when he got into the bathtub, he couldn’t feel his right leg anymore, after which he wanted to he got up and fell into the tub, his leg turned like children who have spastic tetraparesis, then his hand turned. I don’t know how I managed to get her out of the bathtub by myself, she is now taller than me, she is already 1.70 m, but when I got to the living room with her, she couldn’t even speak anymore. I immediately realized that it was some kind of stroke – the doctors did not give him this diagnosis, because in the MRI the brain came out without any stain, that’s why they called it a transient ischemic attack. I mean, it was a thrombus that came, blocked and left. This was her luck and the reason why she was not left with semi-paresis or any other handicap“, she told.
After undergoing thorough investigations in Turkey, doctors recommended Sofia a complex treatment. As a result, she managed to recover almost completely her physical condition.
“Physically, she no longer feels like the child she was before, even if she was not affected. She recovered, but she was deeply affected by what she saw in the hospital, many sick children, many sad mothers and an oppressive atmosphere“, she added, according to the cited source.
Tily Niculae said that when she arrived with her daughter at the Obregia Hospital, Sofia recovered, but she could no longer speak Romanian, but only English, and even that with difficulty.
“During the MRI, it was my biggest fight with myself, because I was trying to induce a state of stillness, to not move. There is no greater pain for a parent than being powerless for your child. And when Sofia started to cry and asked me: “Do you think it’s normal for something like this to happen to a 12-year-old child?”, it was very difficult for me to answer her.“, the artist described her inner struggle.
When a stroke occurs
A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or reduced, causing cells to die from lack of oxygen and nutrients.
There are two main types: ischemic stroke, caused by a blood clot, and hemorrhagic stroke, caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain.
Symptoms include sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, difficulty speaking, confusion and dizziness. Prompt medical intervention is essential to reduce the severity of long-term effects.
The Ministry of Health warns that, annually, over 60,000 Romanians suffer a stroke. Moreover, cerebrovascular diseases are among the main causes of death and disability in Romania, underlining the seriousness of this public health problem.
Stroke not only affects adults, but also children and even babies, and in some cases, the causes remain unknown. Globally, it is estimated that there are approximately 6 cases of stroke in every 100,000 children annually, with a slight increase in the incidence in children under 2 years of age.
