The Godfather actor, 84, has had a number of high-profile relationships throughout his illustrious career, including Diane Keaton, Jill Clayburgh, Penelope Ann Miller, Lyndall Hobbs and Lucila Solá – but this one isn’t he never married, writes the Daily Mail.
He revealed that he strongly opposed such a union because he did not believe it would “it doesn’t help anything”.
He did, however, come close to proposing to his ex-girlfriend and Apollo 13 actress Kathleen Quinlan, now 69.
“My time with Kathleen was the closest I’ve ever been to marriage”he wrote. “But I’ve always shied away from marriage.“
“I don’t think I saw how it would help anything. I just wanted to avoid what I thought at the time was inevitable, getting on the pain train.”
He added: “I thank God that Kathleen is still my friend and I love her. But it wasn’t easy to say no to marrying a woman I loved.
“She knew what she wanted and she got it, it was just with someone else. It hurt when he left and I carried that pain for many years.”
Al dated Kathleen for about two years from 1979 to 1981.
After their relationship, she married artist Warren Long in 1987. Their marriage did not last, and they divorced a few years later.
She then married actor Bruce Abbott in 1994. They divorced in 2022.
Four children from different relationships
Despite never marrying, Al has four children from three different relationships.
He has daughter Julie Marie, 34, with acting coach Jan Tarrant, and fraternal twins Anton and Olivia, 23, with National Lampoon’s Vacation actress Beverly D’Angelo.
Recently, in June 2023, Al became the father of Roman, along with producer and executive Noor Alfallah, at the age of 83.
In August, while in Beverly Hills, Noor was asked if she would ever consider marrying Al, to which she replied: “I don’t know.”
She previously noted that she had no intention of going down the marriage route with the Oscar winner, describing herself as straight “not the marrying type” in November 2023.
Parenting experience
In a recent interview, Al said that becoming a parent later in life was no different than his younger years.
“It’s always the same”the legend of the octogenarian actress told People. “It’s always the same. It’s a mini miracle. That’s all I can say. It is so wonderful to have children. For me, I liked it. It changed me, if you want to say, for the better.“
“It changed me forever. And the idea that you’re turning your attention to other human beings who happen to be your children … that’s where the love is.”
He will stay “good friends and co-parents” with Noor, despite ending their two-year relationship a few months after the birth of their son.
After breaking up with Noor, she had “more dates” with Real Time host Bill Maher, who, at 68, is 38 years her senior.
Why “Sonny”
Penguin Press published Pacino’s first memoir, Sonny Boy, on October 8.
Al was nicknamed “Sonny” back when he was a rebellious teenager attending the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, made famous in the 1980 film Fame directed by Alan Parker.
His memoir also details his time on the sets of Scarface and The Godfather, in which he played mobster Michael Corleone.
The film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, but he was so anxious about the possibility of being fired that he secretly hoped an ankle injury on set would give him an opportunity to get out from the movie.
