The measles epidemic shows no signs of abating anytime soon. In the last week alone, between April 22-28, 872 new cases and one death were registered. The recent death was of a 42-year-old man who had not been vaccinated against measles and had other health conditions.
The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) announced that between January 1, 2023 and April 28, 2024, 13,985 cases of measles were confirmed in Romania, according to Agerpres.
Since the beginning of the reporting period, there have been 15 deaths due to measles. A 42-year-old man died of measles. He was not vaccinated against the disease and had the following comorbidities: toxic liver disease with cholestasis, essential hypertension.
Measles cases were reported in all counties and in Bucharest, with the most cases in Brașov (1,934), Mureș (1,170) and Bucharest (1,432).
Between December 6, 2023 and April 28, 135,944 MOR vaccine doses were used, of which 22,055 were for children aged between 9 and 11 months, according to data extracted from the National Electronic Register of Vaccination (RENV).

Measles is highly contagious and can have serious or even fatal consequences, especially among young and unvaccinated children.
Measles vaccination saved an estimated 57 million lives between 2000 and 2022 and is considered highly effective, with 93% effectiveness for one dose and 97% for two doses. Even though vaccinated people can become infected, the symptoms are generally milder.
Any unvaccinated person can contract measles, a dangerous and potentially fatal disease. One in 4 patients requires hospitalization, and for 1 in 1,000 cases, measles can be fatal, according to INSP data.
