The explosion of gas followed by a strong fire, which shook the Amara locality on Friday night in Ialomița county, left behind an impressive, perfectly round crater, caught in the first aerial images made on the spot. We remind you that the incident occurred on Friday, August 29, when the teams of a local society digging a deep well for the city’s water supply, accidentally gave over a bag of gases accumulated underground.

Thus, 280 meters deep, the drilling machines reached a gas bag, and the accumulated pressure threw a mixture of water, toxic gases and solid materials. In a few moments, the area turned into an hell: the gases lit up, generating a strong explosion and a fire ball that could see from tens of kilometers away.

People panicked, and the warning shouts rang in the night: “Run! Get back!”. Fortunately, the incident took place in an isolated area and no victims were recorded, because the huge flames could endanger the nearby households, and the authorities decided to prevent 270 inhabitants of an area of 300 meters around the crater.

The fire was extinguished after a difficult intervention of the firefighters and the first measurements performed by the specialized teams show that there are no toxic substances in the atmosphere to endanger the population, the authorities announced on Saturday. However, the area remains carefully monitored by the authorities.

Perfectly rotary crater

The images captured after the fire extinguishes show the extent of the disaster: the crater formed in the soil, almost perfectly circular, stretches on tens of meters and completely destroyed the surrounding vegetation. The houses on the edge of the perimeter were also affected, some remaining with damaged roofs.

The authorities have opened an investigation that must determine whether all the security procedures were respected during the drilling works and what measures will be taken so that such incidents will not be repeated.
