Adrian Sutil, former German Formula 1 driver, is going through difficult times after being arrested on charges of fraud and embezzlement.
The athlete retired from motor racing in 2013 and the current investigation appears to focus on activities after the end of his Grand Prix career.
Authorities’ operations took place simultaneously in Monaco, Switzerland and Germany. Sutil was detained in the city of Sindelfingen by police from the state of Baden-Württemberg, who had already issued an arrest warrant.
The investigation is ongoing, but officials have not released full details of what is being investigated. However, they specified that the former pilot is suspected of aggravating forms of fraud and embezzlement, in a case considered very serious.
According to foreign journalists, the investigation could be linked to luxury car deals in Monaco and Switzerland, places where Sutil lived or did business after retiring from Formula 1.
It is not the first time that the German has been in trouble with the law
In 2011, he received a suspended sentence after a violent incident in a nightclub in Shanghai, an episode that also seriously affected his relationship with Lewis Hamilton.
The two were close, but their friendship fell apart after Hamilton, who was present at the time of the incident, refused to testify in court. Sutil reacted harshly at the time, publicly criticizing the Briton.
