Engineers tell Messi to watch out as they create a robot that can replace humans in soccer and is aiming for World Cup glory in a few years.

Robots have been created for many things, but the most recent one may surpass humans’ ability to play soccer.
Boffins at the University of California, Los Angeles have been hard at work creating a sports robot that can hit a ball to rival the most seasoned pros. It’s been in the works for years, but the team is finally seeing some positive progress. Enough that he could face Lionel Messi in a match, they say, writes dailystar.co.uk.
The robot was named “a robot that beats Messi in soccer” – or ARTEMIS for short. According to the UCLA website, they also refer to the robot as “Advanced robotic technology for increased mobility and improved stability“, but Messi’s explanation seems to be the favorite.
They add online: “During laboratory tests, ARTEMIS has been timed walking at 2.1 meters per second, which would make it the world’s fastest humanoid robot,” according to UCLA researchers. “It is also believed to be the first humanoid robot designed in an academic setting that is capable of running, and only the third overall.”
The creators tried to train and entered ARTEMIS in the RoboCup, an international autonomous robot soccer competition. But they don’t stop there. They claim they want the robot to play for the World Cup winning team by 2050.
In a video of the robot, a pair of silvery mech legs can appear to spring up before kicking the ball that was gently kicked towards it. The structure currently has no torso or head, so it may not be ready for the objective.
The robot is said to be “the first of its kind”, with actuators—devices that generate motion from energy—were designed to behave like biological muscles. In this way they are not the same “robotics” like other creations and would look more like a football player.
The robot is not yet ready for the World Cup. ARTEMIS was shown at GITEX 2023, a big tech convention, but struggled to hit the ball in videos.
He often hit the air and occasionally cut the ball.
“This robot isn’t very good at dodgeball, and I haven’t even seen it try to play soccer. Looks like it’s going to be an Amazon worker one day, though.”one commenter wrote on YouTube about the bot.
“Better than most Man U players”, added another.
