The International Documentary Film Festival Astra Film from Sibiu has opened the registration session Petru 2025. The organizers announce that this year they will introduce a new competition section, the short film.

The directors from all over the world can register their documentaries for the 2025 edition on April 1, within five competitive sections: emerging voices of the documentary, Central and Eastern Europe, Romania, Docschool and short film. This year, the festival takes place on October 19-26.
The proposed films for the official selection of the AFF2024 edition must be part of the documentary genre. The cinematographic qualities and honesty, the courage to address difficult themes, originality and creativity are particularly appreciated. In addition to the competitive sections, the official Astra Film Festival program will include a series of curatorial selections, thematic sections and special programs.
For the five competitive sections, films made after January 1, 2024 will be accepted, as follows:
Emerging voices of the documentary. They are eligible for feature film documentaries, lasting over 60 minutes, signed by authors at the first, second or at most the third film.
Central & Eastern Europe. Section open to feature film documentaries (over 60 min), which addresses problems specific to the ex-communist block area.
Romania. Section dedicated to the documentaries produced or co-produced in Romania and/or international productions or co-production that addresses specific issues, regardless of their duration.
Short traction. For the new competition section introduced by AFF, documentaries with a duration of up to 40 minutes are eligible. Only European productions/co-productions will be selected.
Docschool. Documentations produced or co-produced by universities or film institutes are eligible or within some post-university specialization programs in cinema, regardless of their duration.

Included on the list of major film festivals in the world, Astra Film Festival is the only non-fiction film festival that can make direct nominations for the European Film Academy Awards, considered to be the “European Oscar”.
